Indications:
- The Chaperon Admistration MMC states the service as running regardless of the actual state of the service.
- The Chaperon service cannot be started from the Chaperon MMC as it always states the service is running.
Versions Affected:
- This error affects patchZ5 and prior Chaperon installations that were installed AFTER Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803).
- Chaperon installations installed before the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) was added are not affected.
Cause:
- Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) inserts a Chaperon registry key differently than past Windows Installers that renders some functions of Chaperon unusable.
Solution:
Correcting this issue involves making registry changes. Making incorrect changes can adversly affect your system. Making registry changes is not recommended if you are not familiar with doing so. - Stop the Chaperon service by clicking Start > Run and typing cmd. When the command prompt appears, type net stop chaperon2000.
- Close all Chaperon administration MMC's including those that may be opened in terminal server.
- Click Start > Run and type regedt32 to open the registry editor.
- Expand HKLM > System > Current Control Set > Services > Chaperon2000.
- Locate the ImagePath value and double-click it.
- The string will contain quotes on each side of the path which is incorrect. Remove the quotes from the beginning and end of the path.
- Restart Chaperon.
